Well, once again, the members of St. Wolfgang's Bavarian Guild travelled to Sherwood, Oregon for the Robin Hood Days celebration on July 19th and 20th.
This was our fourth visit to their fair city - the 50th anniversary of the festival. Boy, what changes Sherwood has gone through in those fifty years, growing from a sleepy farming community to a thriving suburb of Portland, being the fastest growing city in Oregon throughout the 1990's.
But, they still hold to their old traditions and the Robin Hood Days is high on the list. To celebrate their 50th, they hired St. Wolfgang's and the Olde World Puppet Theatre to create and present a new puppet show featuring the legends of Robin Hood. We presented the show both Friday Evening and Saturday Afternoon, and it was well received by all.
Guild Master Dan DeMoy was the narrator, and Steven Overton, Leah Arnold, Nicole Kirby and Candace Dobson were the puppeteers.
The show designed by Dan DeMoy, written by Steven Overton and Bill Holznagel, and built by the members of St. Wolfgang's.
The rod puppets and the background sets are constructed of colored corrugated plastic, made to look like stained glass windows come to life. (for more information of the building of the show, click here.)
The construction of the puppet show took up all of the time that in past years we devoted to the parade float, so we didn't have one this year. Instead, we marched in the parade with banners fluttering in the breeze.
It was good to be back together as a guild, once again, with both old and new friends, and we're glad that Justen Rambo, who was in an auto accident the day before the festival and couldn't attend, is feeling much better now.
But the surprize of the entire event was the Knighting of Ken, Bobbi & Steve Overton and Dan DeMoy and Marty Richmond (me). Well, the surprizes came in differing amounts to different people. I was told back in May that Ken, Bobbi & Steve were to be knighted. Ken & Bobbi learned through the grapevine that they were to be knighted. I knew - but Steve didn't - that he was to be knighted. But, none of us knew that Dan & I were to be knighted. So we have all taken our places as Knights of the Realm of Sherwood.
Congratulations to Phil, Alice, Mike, John, and the rest of the Sherwoodians who put on such a great festival.
