For our third year's visit to Leavenworth Washington's 30th Annual Maifest celebration, Mother's Day, May 14, 2000, St. Wolfgang's Bavarian Guild once again reenacted the reception which followed the marriage in 1568 of Bavarian Duke Albrecht V's son Wilhelm V to Princess Renata of Lorraine, which combined two of the most powerful 16th century European families. This year featured Justen Rambo as the Prince and Jessica Knight as the Princess.

It became known as the wedding of the century, for the party after the wedding lasted for two weeks, and entertained thousands of people. This will take you to a description of the actual party in history.

Mentioned in the history of the actual event was a fantasy joust, where the noble kids spoofed the activities of the knights with their jousts and fighting demonstrations. This led Guildmaster Steven M. Overton to recreate the event with toy horses, kitchen utensil weapons, and giant Q-tips for knight bashing.

We presented the Dan DeMoy production of The Pretzel-Crossed Lovers, the Agnes Bernauer story. This is the sad tale of a German Bath house owners' daughter who dared to fall in love with a prince. Let's just say it doesn't have a happy ending.

Guild Master Steven M. Overton's Olde World Puppet Theatre also made a presentation. No Rhyme, Nor Reason, a 45 minute marionette production, was performed in the round by Steve, Dan DeMoy, and Candace Dobson. This award-winning show was a first for Leavenworth.

Along with everything else, we sang, we danced, and we partied just like in the days of old.

The Seattle Knights were back providing both their authentic foot-fighters, and this year they brought their horses to Leavenworth and performed their death-defying horseback jousts.

The weather was almost too good, with temperatures reaching the upper 80's, with little cloud cover to shade us from the heat.

Once again we held breakfast with the Duke both Saturday & Sunday Mornings at the Tumwater Inn, run by Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce President, Sandy Owens. Wonderful food, and photo opportunities for all of her other guests. They also catered lunch for us, again superb, and we were able to leave our kitchen at home and spend more time on our entertainment events.

Patty Herres, events Coordinator of the Chamber of Commerce threw herself into the spirit of the event providing three days of non-stop entertainment and events including: dancers and singers and bands, Maipole and Bavarian Folk Dancing, a Mother's Day Proclamation; Art in the Park; Alpenhorn players; Period horses and wagons; Lions Club Breakfast; a Spaghetti Feed; and the ever popular Bernese Mountain Dogs (they're soooo cute).

Patti Herres and the rest of the Chamber staff, the City of Leavenworth, der Ritterhoff Motel, The Tumwater Inn, St. Wolfgangs Bavarian Guild, and the Seattle Knights all worked long and hard to pull this event off, and they are all to be congratulated. Hip, Hip, Huzzah, etc. We all had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year.
